The event says start at Fisherman Cottage then various pubs en route but apart from the Jolly Anglers, this means lots of Fullers I think - a pretty bland beer these days (Bull, Flowing Spring). Great House, French Horn offer little alternative and are very expensive. You could go further into Playhatch and come back down into Caversham. I'd be inclined to stop at the Bull and head back to the Jolly; or head on to Wargrave and get a train back.

Sorry Adrian, I've now had a chance to look at this on a real screen rather than just my phone. I am not intending to stop at any pubs other than the Fishermans cottage as meeting point, the Bull as destination and if peole so feel like it the Jolly Anglers on return. I will speak to the social secretary and have the misinformation corrected.

Thank you for your feedback Adrian, this will be the first of what I hope will be a series of walks. I've chosen the fishermans cottage to the bull at sonning for this first one because it's a route I've done before and therefore am less likely to get us lost but it's lovely to have branch members giving input and social ideas, we're always on the lookout for fresh ideas and inspiration so thankyou, I'll bear those in mind.

I'm pretty sure that Katrina doesn't check this forum, but your best bet would be to speak to her. I don't think that the intention to this is to provide a huge range of beer. On the contrary, it's an opportunity to visit some pubs that you might not normally make the effort to visit, and have a pleasant walk on the way. Whilst Fuller's might be "bland", it is still real ale, and the pubs that serve it need our support as much as any.

Paul says that Fullers pubs need our support as much as any. My view is that Fullers neither needs or deserves our support as much as local freehouses like the Jolly Anglers who serve good local ales, ciders, and food at reasonable prices. Fullers pubs now are pretty much all the same: they make their money from food, sport, entertainment, and the devil's fizz - they don't focus on real ale. The ale choice is between bland overpriced session ales; excellent but ridiculously priced premium ales; and no guest ales. If you are out walking and feel like a pint and pass a Fullers pub there is no reason not to go in; but I can't see any Fullers pub as a destination, worth spending some time and money in. As with the other big regionals - Greene King, Brains etc their main interest is market domination. Reading CAMRA members have not so far frequented the Jolly Anglers, either informally or on CAMRA social events, for whatever reason. This event is a chance to put that right. Time to put aside the politics and personalities, and concentrate on supporting local pubs which show a real committment to real ale and cider.

Dave, I'm not sure what gave you that impression, but I'm certainly not boycotting the Jolly Anglers. Neither is it the only pub in the branch to give active support to CAMRA. Even if it was, that is hardly a reason not to visit and support other local pubs.

The Jolly Anglers is probably best for the end of the walk; such is the range of beers and ciders that you might not walk much further ! Another idea for a short local walk: along river to Caversham, Prospect St, up hill on Peppard Rd, take a little detour left to Priest Hill and take in the view over Reading, then continue on to Emmer Green (either on Peppard Rd or Rotherfield Way). Two pubs opposite each other, Black & White Horse.

I think it would be great to include the Jolly Anglers in on the walk. Much as I enjoy a good pint of Chiswick or Pride, it doesn't seem too much of a detour to walk about 200 yards to enjoy some proper local ales (like Binghams)as these always seem to be available at the Anglers.
