10 Years of the London tavern (Hobgoblin) Somebody - I think it was Johnny G - suggested I should put my ode on the Hobgoblin's 10th anniversary on the CAMRA website. So here it is - anyone with any knowledge of English poetry will doubtless recognise the parody of Wordsworth's Tintern Abbey. With some current questions over the future of the pub it is perhaps also of topical interest.

Big Guns Brought to Bear in Brakspear?s Battle. The battle to Save Brakspear's brewery continues apace. The brewery is making contradictory statements; saying that it is <i>"business as usual"</i> but just as local drinkers breathe a huge sigh of releif they then add <i>"the company has instituted a strategic review of its operations including its brewing, but no changes in Brakspear beers or a decision to change brewing have been made."</i>

BRUTAL ASSAULT ON AWARD WINNER <p>A brutal assault took place yesterday on the site of this years Reading Beer Festival. Award-winning Andrew Lord, aged 35, was struck down by a scaffolding pole wielded by the Chairman of the Branch, Roy Garraway, aged 51.</p><p>Whilst assisting the perpetrator to erect a part of the stillaging for this nationally known event, Mr. Lord had occasion to bend over, thus proffering the back of his head to the villain, who, taking full advantage of the situation, let slip the six foot piece of scaffolding and caught the award winner on the cranium.</p><p>The miscreant expressed remorse at the "accident", whilst Andrew shrugged off the incident and is quoted, by a reliable source, as saying "it was a no-brainer."</p>

Its all starting to happen The Beer Festival really is taking shape now.The marquees went up on Sunday, virtually all the beer arrived today (and there really is loads of it!) The glasses (pints this year) have arrived.A dozen of us allready have bad backs from stillaging 300 odd casks of beer. The programme, (well more of a book this year!) hit the printers at 7.00am.All we need now is the punters! There's no doubt that this year will be the best Reading Beer Festival yet.

Changes in Central Reading Pubs Nowadays new pubs are opening, pubs are changing and worse still, closing, at a tremendous rate; this is especially true in urban areas. Just two years after surveying for the Berkshire Pub Guide, members of Reading CAMRA re-surveyed those pubs within the IDR (ring-road). The number of changes was remarkable and not good news for the discerning drinker.

Honours even in local pub award. Reading and Mid-Berkshire CAMRA?s Pub of the Year Award has for the first time ever been jointly awarded to two pubs. <i>The Retreat</i>, St John?s Street and <i>The Hobgoblin</i>, Broad Street, both received the award.<p>A pub has to be top-notch even to be nominated for the prestigious Pub of the Year Award. Voted on by members of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), the selection process takes into account every aspect of a pub that makes it great. Ambiance, friendliness, community spirit, selection and quality of its real ales are all carefully considered as well as that indescribable something that you can?t put in to words but you know makes the pub stand head and shoulders above the rest.
